South Korea was elected as the 19th member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. Our government pledged to play an active role in international nuclear issues that are controversial, such as North Korea's nuclear program and the Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 28th, South Korea was elected as a member of the IAEA Far East Group Board of Governors for the 2023?2025 term at the 67th IAEA General Conference held in Vienna, Austria on the 27th (local time).
This marks the 19th time South Korea has been elected as an IAEA Board member since joining the IAEA as a founding member in 1957 (13 times as a regional board member and 6 times as a rotating board member).
The IAEA is a specialized independent agency under the United Nations recognized for its expertise in nuclear safety and peaceful use of nuclear energy. The majority of UN member states, including South Korea (178 out of 193 countries), are members.
Regarding this election to the Board of Governors, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "This reflects the status of our country as one of the world's top five nuclear powers," and added, "We will actively participate in all IAEA discussions, including North Korea's nuclear issues and the Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water, and will enhance our international contributions in the nuclear field."
