Lee Jae-myung, Overcoming Detention Crisis: "Judiciary, the Last Bastion of Human Rights... Politics Must Give Hope to the People"

Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed his gratitude on the 4th regarding the dismissal of the arrest warrant, saying, "I deeply thank the judiciary for clearly proving that it is the last bastion of human rights."

After the arrest warrant was dismissed, Lee came out of the main gate of Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do, and said, "I first thank the many people who stayed with me late at night and the citizens who are still awake watching this scene."

He stated, "Politics is always about taking care of the lives of the people and pioneering the future of the nation. I hope that the ruling and opposition parties, as well as the government, will not forget this and return to true politics, which is not a war to kill and eliminate the opponent, but a competition to see who can properly play a greater role for the people and the country."

Lee said, "The day after tomorrow is Chuseok, a holiday to be joyfully celebrated, but the lives of the people and the current state of our economy and livelihood are extremely difficult," adding, "I ask the government, the ruling party, and all politicians to become a source of hope for the people and to be helpful for the future of this country. Once again, I deeply thank the judiciary for firmly upholding the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea and making a wise judgment."

On the same day, Lee returned to Green Hospital, where he was receiving treatment after fasting, 18 hours after appearing at the court for the pre-arrest warrant hearing in the morning.

After the decision to dismiss the arrest warrant, Hong Ik-pyo, the new floor leader of the Democratic Party, Cho Jung-sik, the secretary-general, and Supreme Council members Jung Cheong-rae, Ko Min-jung, Park Chan-dae, Seo Young-kyo, and Jang Kyung-tae visited Seoul Detention Center.
