Incheon City announced on the 26th that it plans to complete the improvement construction of Cheongna IC on the Incheon International Airport Expressway, a section prone to chronic congestion during commuting hours, by the end of 2025.
The city plans to expand the Cheongna IC entrance road from the existing one lane to two lanes and add an additional exit in two directions instead of one on the Gyeongin Ara Waterway Jeongseojin Road. If the effect of adding the new exit is not significant, the city will also consider expanding the existing entrance and exit roads.
Cheongna IC, which opened in June 2013, is currently experiencing severe congestion as the number of vehicles using it has reached 3.5 times the initially expected traffic volume (10,104 vehicles per day) after 10 years.
Earlier, the Incheon Research Institute announced research results through the "Feasibility Study on the Expansion Project of Cheongna IC Exit Road," showing a benefit-cost ratio (B/C) of 1.53 and emphasizing the urgency of simultaneously promoting the expansion of both entrance and exit roads at Cheongna IC.
An official from Incheon City stated, "In connection with the policy of reducing and waiving tolls on Yeongjong and Incheon Bridge, which the city has promoted as a key policy, we expect to lower the Cheongna IC toll (from 2,500 won to 2,000 won) and resolve vehicle flow issues in the chronically congested section."
