Recently, the demand for character products has been increasing regardless of age, for both children and adults. According to the '2022 Character Industry White Paper' published by the Korea Creative Content Agency under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the visit rate to domestic character shops increased from 49.3% in 2021 to 60.1% last year, and the purchase experience rate also rose from 70.4% in 2021 to 78.2% last year. The Cheongnyangni, Gimpo Airport, and Zeta Plex Jamsil branches, which planned and opened Sanrio Market and Pok?mon Zone for the first time in Korea last year, also grew by an average of 15% compared to the same period before opening, and sales of character products increased more than 20 times.
Accordingly, Lotte Mart opened and has been operating a 'Character Specialty Shop' on the 3rd floor of the Toys "R" Us store at Zeta Plex Seoul Station branch since the 14th. Zeta Plex Seoul Station branch has the highest proportion of foreign visitors compared to other branches, with foreign customers accounting for 30% of sales.
This specialty shop consists of a total of seven sections: 'Catch! TinyTAN Shop,' the first to be introduced in a large supermarket; the largest-scale 'Pok?mon Zone,' 'Nintendo,' 'Sanrio Market,' the enthusiast-favored 'Disney Market,' 'LEGO Store,' and 'Sylvanian Town.' Each store offers various goods such as figures, dolls, and accessories, as well as photo zones, allowing all visitors to create enjoyable memories.
The Catch! TinyTAN Shop features artwork from the new season 'Sweet and Sour Catch! TinyTAN,' selling popular new toys such as Village Dessert Shop and Ice Cream Car. It is equipped with cameras for visitors to take photos using TinyTAN artwork, and machines inside the store allow customers to decorate and print their photos. The Pok?mon Zone offers about 300 Pok?mon toys, stationery, snacks, and various character products for extensive shopping. A large Monster Ball is installed in the center of the store.
At the Disney Market, visitors can find over 200 types of Disney 100th anniversary commemorative plush toys and various Disney products exclusively planned and developed through collaboration between Toys "R" Us and Disney. Unlike other character shops, the LEGO Store has expanded its display of high-end products targeting adult enthusiasts. Sylvanian Town exhibits Korea’s only diorama composed of all Sylvanian families and 12 animal sculptures recreated in actual Sylvanian size, attracting visitors' attention.
The Nintendo specialty store features a statue of the popular character 'Super Mario' and a game zone and photo zone where visitors can experience 'Pikmin 4,' a popular game this year. At Sanrio Market, visitors can take four-cut photos using the Sanrio-themed 'Photo Signature' and purchase nine limited-edition acrylic keyrings, including the Cinnamoroll acrylic keyring, available only at Zeta Plex Seoul Station branch.
Additionally, Lotte Mart has set up and operates Korea’s first 'Capsule Street' in front of the Toys "R" Us store, where about 500 types of genuine Bandai figures and goods can be obtained through capsule toy machines. Capsule Street was inspired by the 'Bandai Namco Cross Store,' the world’s largest capsule toy shop recently opened in Ikebukuro Sunshine City, Japan, and offers the same genuine Bandai figures and goods as in Japan. To introduce Bandai gacha machines, Lotte Mart directly communicated with Bandai Namco Korea regarding product sourcing, contracts, and operation systems, and after about six months of consultation, installed the machines for the first time in Korea at Zeta Plex Seoul Station branch.
Meanwhile, to celebrate Chuseok, Lotte Mart is holding 'Happy Toys "R" Us Day' from the 21st of last month to the 4th of next month, offering over 2,200 toys at discounts of up to 70%.
