Providing Drinking Water in Africa, Supporting Breakfast for Food-Insecure Children Domestically
On the 23rd, Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam successfully concluded the '2023 Changwon Global Sharing Walking Festival' held at 3.15 Haeyang Nuri Park in Masanhappo-gu, jointly hosted by Changwon City, World Vision Changwon Branch, and Gyeongnam Shafron Volunteer Group, and organized by World Vision Gyeongnam Ulsan Headquarters and Gyeongnam Sponsorship Association.
Held for the fifth consecutive year since 2019, the '2023 Changwon Global Sharing Walking Festival' is a sharing campaign inspired by the fact that children in developing countries walk an average of 6 km daily to obtain water. This year, about 1,200 citizens, students, and parents participated.
Participants experienced the harsh realities of child labor and gained some empathy for the difficulties African children face daily through various activities set up at the event venue, such as carrying water containers while walking 6 km, child labor experience (panning for gold), and African children VR experience.
The participation fee for this event (20,000 KRW per person) will be fully donated to promote a culture of sharing. The donations will be used to provide breakfast for undernourished children in Korea and to install drinking water facilities in water-scarce countries overseas, helping children in difficult situations to realize their dreams and hopes.
Jo Myung-rae, the second vice mayor, said, “I thank all the citizens who participated so that not only African children but also children in welfare blind spots within the region can grow up in better environments,” adding, “We will continue to do our best for Changwon, a UNICEF child-friendly city where all children are happy.”
