Jeon Woo-won (27), the grandson of former President Jeon Du-hwan, has been brought to trial on drug use charges.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's Violent Crime Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Shin Jun-ho) announced on the 21st that Jeon was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act.

Jeon is accused of using four types of drugs, including methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ketamine, and marijuana, all classified as psychotropic substances, in the United States from November last year to March this year.
The prosecution stated, "Considering that he admitted to the crime and is sincerely reflecting on his actions, we decided to indict without detention."
While staying in the United States on March 17, Jeon mentioned MDMA and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a hallucinogenic drug, during a YouTube live broadcast and swallowed pills with water. The police arrested Jeon at Incheon International Airport on March 28 after he arrived from New York, USA, and investigated him. Jeon was released the following evening and admitted to the police that he had used marijuana and DMT. However, since DMT was not detected in urine and hair tests, it was excluded from the charges.
The police handed Jeon over to the prosecution without detention on April 28, and the prosecution summoned him for questioning once on June 14. Jeon returned to Korea after exposing suspicions of slush funds related to his family on his social media in the United States and expressing his intention to apologize to the bereaved families of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.
Immediately after his release, on March 31, he met with the May 18 victims' families in Gwangju and apologized, saying, "My grandfather, Jeon Du-hwan, is the main culprit of the May 18 massacre," and "He is a sinner who committed a very great crime." On May 17, he attended a memorial ceremony held at the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery in Unjeong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, where he offered incense and flowers as part of the May 18 cemetery visiting group.
