Korea has been selected as the host country for the 54th World Environment Day in 2025.
The Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced on the 20th (local time) at the UNEP office in New York, USA, after a high-level meeting, that Korea was chosen as the host country for the 54th World Environment Day in 2025. This marks the first time in 28 years that Korea will host an international environmental event since the 28th World Environment Day ceremony held in Seoul in 1997.
World Environment Day (held annually on June 5) is an international observance established at the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment to pledge the international community's interest and efforts toward environmental conservation. It is the largest environmental event globally, attended by key figures from various countries, representatives of international organizations, corporations, and civil society groups worldwide, all committing to joint international efforts.
In particular, the 2025 World Environment Day event is expected to be an opportunity to widely raise awareness in the international community about the importance of ending plastic pollution, as it will be held the year after the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiation on the Plastic Treaty, which is scheduled to be hosted domestically in the second half of 2024.
