Seoul's autonomous districts are expanding public parking lots to alleviate parking difficulties in residential areas.

Yongsan-gu, Gwangjin-gu, and Gangbuk-gu have expanded parking spaces by constructing multi-level public parking lots, while Dongdaemun-gu is building an underground public parking lot.

Meanwhile, Seocho-gu has attracted attention with a public parking lot featuring complex functions such as children's playgrounds, a maternal and child health center, and a community center.

Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) will open a new-concept parking complex cultural space combining parking functions with health, childcare, and cultural facilities, called 'Yangjae Public Parking Lot (Yangjae 1-dong 90-2)' on the 22nd.

The construction of Yangjae Public Parking Lot was initiated in response to residents' requests to resolve parking difficulties in this area densely populated with row houses and to expand cultural, leisure, and health facilities. Yangjae Public Parking Lot (Yangjae 1-dong 90-2) is a building with a total floor area of 8,457㎡, consisting of three underground floors and four above-ground floors, built by demolishing the old ground-level parking lot. The underground floors 3 to 1 are used as parking lots, while the above-ground floors 1 to 4 are filled with resident convenience facilities. The parking capacity increased by 77 spaces from the previous 98 to 175.

In particular, the first floor above ground, with a total area of 523㎡, houses the 'Salon in Yangjaecheon Cafe' and the detached house management office 'Firefly Center.' The second floor is home to the indoor playground exclusively for infants and toddlers, 'Yangjae Seoripul Nori School.' With a total floor area of 654㎡, it provides play spaces tailored to the physical development of different infant and toddler age groups, offering various experience zones including digital and physical play equipment. The third floor houses the 'Yangjae Maternal and Child Health Center,' which supports the health of mothers and young children, providing customized one-stop comprehensive services from pregnancy preparation to childbirth and childcare. The fourth floor accommodates the 'Seocho Single-Person Household Support Center.' In a 609㎡ space including seminar rooms, cooking classes, and community rooms, it supports customized services and network formation for single-person households. The Seocho Single-Person Household Support Center, which first opened nationwide in 2019, has relocated and expanded from the fourth floor of Banpo 1-dong Community Center.

The district will hold an opening ceremony at 7 p.m. on the 22nd. The event will include a progress report, facility tours, and an autumn night concert featuring popera performances and a pop jazz trio. Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, "I am pleased to establish a parking lot and cultural complex facility that residents have long wished for," adding, "I hope Yangjae Public Parking Lot will become a space where residents can resolve parking difficulties and enjoy culture and leisure."

Yongsan-gu (Mayor Park Hee-young) secured 7.1 billion KRW on the 9th for the 'Haebangchon Public Parking Lot Multi-level Construction' project. The project site around Yongsan-dong 2-ga 1-1497 is a residential area densely populated with small-scale multi-family and low-rise houses. The nearby Sinheung Market adds visitor vehicles, worsening parking difficulties. The district plans to utilize the site area (883㎡) as efficiently as possible. The current 24-space flat outdoor parking lot will be converted into a two-story, three-level steel-frame building (total floor area 1,972.53㎡), creating a total of 55 parking spaces.

Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) plans to convert the flat parking lot with 53 spaces in the densely populated multi-family houses and villas area around Junggok-dong 72 into a multi-level parking lot with two levels on the first floor, adding 39 spaces for a total of 92 shared parking spaces. Upon completion in July 2025, the project is expected to alleviate traffic inconveniences caused by illegal parking on the narrow Ginkgo Alley and reduce blind spots, enhancing residents' safety and convenience.

Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) secured 22 billion KRW in city funds to build a four-story, five-level parking tower at the Ui-dong Transportation Plaza by 2025, providing 266 parking spaces.

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is set to actively promote the construction of an underground public parking lot beneath the road behind the district office. Yongdu-dong near Dongdaemun-gu Office is an old residential area lacking parking spaces, frequently experiencing complaints about traffic inconvenience due to illegal parking. To alleviate parking difficulties, the district has planned to build a two-level underground public parking lot (total floor area 4,487㎡) under Yongdu-dong 47-1 road, accommodating about 86 vehicles.

A Seoul autonomous district official said, "Parking has become one of the most serious urban problems these days," adding, "Seoul's autonomous districts are accelerating the construction of public parking lots by attracting city funds and other resources in this regard."
