Coloray, a KOSDAQ-listed company, announced on the 19th that it will invest a total of 50 million yuan (approximately 9.1 billion KRW) to introduce an eco-friendly cat litter production line with an annual capacity of 25,000 tons and will begin trial production within this month.
Coloray planned the eco-friendly cat litter production line by adding nano titanium dioxide materials, leveraging over 10 years of extensive experience in the fields of nano titanium dioxide and eco-friendly materials. The annual production value of the newly planned production facility is expected to reach 150 million yuan.
Cat owners inevitably pay close attention to cat litter. Cat litter is an essential product for owners as it absorbs and clumps cat waste, making disposal easier. Early cat litters did not clump, making disposal difficult, but with continuous technological advancements, various types of cat litter have emerged, including clumping cat litter, cassava litter, pellet litter, crystal litter, and bentonite litter.
Globally, the main consumption markets for cat litter are concentrated in North America, Europe, Japan, China, and other regions. In 2021, the total global cat litter market size reached 28.192 billion yuan (approximately 5 trillion KRW), and it is expected to reach 42.562 billion yuan (approximately 7 trillion KRW) by 2027, showing steady growth in the cat litter industry market size.
The outlook for China’s pet industry is also bright. According to iMedia Research, the size of China’s pet industry last year was 493.6 billion yuan (approximately 89 trillion KRW), a 25% increase from the previous year, and the market size is expected to reach 811.4 billion yuan (approximately 147 trillion KRW) by 2025. Especially with rising income levels, pet owners’ consumption trends are expanding, and market demand for the quality and cost-effectiveness of pet products is increasing, accelerating the rapid development of pet brands and pet product varieties.
Among these, Coloray is entering the pet business focused on cat litter. Generally, cat litter is made by processing tofu residue, sawdust, and bentonite into small particles, with physical drying agents such as silicon particles used to enhance absorbency. Additionally, chemical products such as antibacterial agents, deodorants, and preservatives are added to improve the functionality and eco-friendliness of cat litter.
Coloray focused on the fact that adding nano titanium to cat litter can produce antibacterial and eco-friendly cat litter with sterilization, pollution prevention, deodorization, and self-cleaning functions. Using its technological expertise in nano titanium dioxide accumulated through years of R&D in the pearl luster pigment field, Coloray manufactures cat litter with added nano titanium dioxide materials. By utilizing the photocatalytic principle, it plans to produce eco-friendly cat litter that decomposes and catalyzes organic matter in the cat litter, completely eliminating over 90% of various bacteria.
A Coloray representative stated, “We plan to rapidly enter the pet product market with higher quality and eco-friendly products,” adding, “Our ultimate goal is to build a premium cat litter brand and become China’s first technology-driven cat litter production company integrating R&D, production, and domestic and international sales.”
They continued, “According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute, Korea’s pet market size grew from 1.9 trillion KRW in 2015 to 3.4 trillion KRW in 2020 and is expected to surpass 6 trillion KRW by 2027,” and added, “Coloray Korea, Coloray’s Korean branch, also plans to actively engage in sales activities.”
