Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has restored the forest-damaged area at the foot of Bulamsan Mountain and created the 'Saesol Park and Bulamsan Woodcraft Experience Center.'
The newly established Saesol Park covers an area of 2,489㎡ around 9-8 Hagye-dong and is located north of the Seoul Science Museum. The district completed land compensation from 2019 to 2021 through a long-term unexecuted urban planning facility (park) compensation project for the area, which had been neglected with unauthorized buildings such as junkyards and flower farms for a long time. Afterwards, obstacles were removed to accelerate the project and provide a resting space for residents.
First, Saesol Park preserves and connects the existing forest and trees. Mountain azaleas, pine trees, three-colored poplars, forsythias, and blue maples were planted around the area and connected to the existing forest walking trails. Since it is at the foot of the mountain, two slope protection and ecological conservation projects were completed in the valley formation areas.
The district also prepared various facilities within the park aiming to create a green community yard favored by residents. Along with the woodcraft experience center, there is a 233㎡ lawn yard, a 157㎡ flower garden, and a 131m circular walking trail surrounding them. Two rest areas and exercise spaces for light daily activities such as cycling, roller massage, and waist rotation were also created.
Additionally, Saesol Park is expected to serve as a multipurpose space for various events and programs. In particular, the district planned a complex cultural space accessible to people of all ages in connection with the woodcraft experience center and aimed to create a nature-friendly park environment harmonizing with the building.
At the Bulamsan Woodcraft Experience Center, visitors can directly create woodcraft items useful in daily life. The programs are divided into ▲Experience Woodcraft and ▲Practical Woodcraft. Experience Woodcraft is open to individuals and groups from elementary school students and above, allowing them to choose and make relatively easy wooden items such as a wooden book stand, dog bookshelf, or coffee carrier.
The Practical Woodcraft class targets individuals and groups from high school students and above, where they use various tools such as electric drills, wood burning tools, and electric sanders to make square trays. Since the work is demanding, it is recommended to participate in pairs or more.
The woodcraft experience center will operate on a trial basis from September 19 to October 31. During this period, the experience is free of charge. Each session can accommodate up to 8 participants, and advance reservations must be made through the Nowon-gu Office website. The operating hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. From November, when normal operations begin, material and usage fees must be paid by card on the day of the experience depending on the item.
In addition, other woodcraft experience facilities in the area include the 'Gongneung Woodcraft Experience Center (Mokyewon)' in Hwarangdae Railroad Park, the 'Namu Sangsang Playground' for preschool children aged 3 to 7, and the 'Gongneung-dong Woodcraft Workshop,' which offers free use of space and tools. Also, the 'Sanggye Woodcraft Experience Center (91 Dongil-ro 237-gil)' and 'Suraksan Woodcraft Experience Center (132-3 Sanggye-dong)' have newly opened and will operate on a trial basis from October 4 to October 31.
Meanwhile, the district is promoting the 'Living Park Regeneration Project' targeting 28 living parks and 90 children's parks in the area. Park regeneration is being carried out in a way that highlights individuality according to the conditions of the surrounding area, including circular walking trails, exercise spaces, lawn yards, rest areas, and reinforcement of children's playground facilities. This project, which started in 2019, has completed 71 parks so far and plans to renovate them sequentially until 2026.
District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, "A place that had been neglected for a long time has transformed into a park and woodcraft experience center where the whole family can heal and experience together. We ask for your interest in various woodcraft experience facilities in the area, including Saesol Park and Bulamsan Woodcraft Experience Center, Gongneung, Sanggye, and Suraksan Woodcraft Experience Centers, and we will continue to do our best for residents' leisure and cultural life."
