UK Competition and Markets Authority Emphasizes AI Accountability and Transparency
UK competition authorities announced seven principles emphasizing accountability and transparency on the 18th (local time) to prevent a few big tech giants from monopolizing artificial intelligence (AI) models.
The principles released by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) include holding developers accountable and preventing big tech from locking technology within closed platforms.
Sarah Cardell, CMA Chief Executive, stated, "While this technology could dramatically increase productivity and make millions of everyday tasks easier, we must not take a positive future for granted," adding, "There is a risk that a few dominant players controlling AI usage could prevent the broader economy from fully benefiting."
The CMA plans to consult with the government, academia, other regulatory bodies, and major AI developers going forward. Previously, the UK decided not to create a new regulatory agency for AI but to distribute regulatory responsibilities among existing bodies such as the Competition and Markets Authority.
The UK is making efforts to take the lead in AI regulatory discussions. In early November, it will host a global AI safety summit. This will be the first summit focused on AI regulation, where leaders will share concerns about AI technology risks and discuss cooperative measures to mitigate them.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) and China held a high-level digital dialogue in Beijing on the same day to discuss AI and related topics. The European Commission emphasized the importance of the ethical use of AI technology and reaffirmed support for international and interoperable technical standards.
