Organizers Estimate Over 10,000 Participants
The National Railroad Workers' Union held a rally in downtown Seoul on the 16th, the fourth day of their strike. They demanded the full implementation of the 4-shift, 2-team system through the operation of KTX trains bound for Suseo and the reinforcement of manpower.
At 2 p.m. that day, the Railroad Union stated near Namyeong Samgeori in Yongsan, Seoul, that "the demands of the Railroad Union are the demands of the overwhelming majority of citizens." They announced that if the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Railroad Corporation do not accept their demands, they will prepare for a second general strike.
Choi Myung-ho, the Central Dispute Countermeasures Committee Chairman of the Railroad Union, said, "It is not the Railroad Union that is holding the citizens' transportation hostage, but the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that is worsening citizens' inconvenience by holding their transportation hostage," and insisted, "The Ministry must step up for the convenient use of trains by citizens."
About 6,500 union members of the Railroad Union gathered from across the country, and including members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions' Public Transport Workers' Union, the organizers estimated that about 10,000 people attended the rally. They ended the rally around 4:15 p.m., marched for about 20 minutes to Seoul Station, and then joined the '3rd Nationwide Rally for the Resignation of the Yoon Seok-yeol Administration.'
On that day, some participants used red smoke bombs for a performance, which led to physical clashes with the police. During this process, one official of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions was arrested on charges of obstructing official duties after protesting against the police who tried to restrain the use of the smoke bombs.
Meanwhile, the Railroad Union began the general strike at 9 a.m. on the 14th. The strike continued until 9 a.m. on the 18th.
