Gumi City in Gyeongbuk has secured 5.16 billion KRW in national funding after three projects were selected in the ‘2024 Sports for All Facilities Support Project’ competition hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Led by Mayor Kim Jang-ho, the city made every effort to secure national funds by repeatedly visiting the National Assembly and central government ministries. It is also known that the city’s active persuasion during a recent visit by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officials to Gumi played a key role in the selection.
The selected projects are part of a public sports facility renovation support program funded by the National Sports Promotion Fund, including ▲Citizen Stadium renovation project (national funding 2.1 billion KRW, city funding 4.9 billion KRW), ▲Park Chung-hee Gymnasium renovation project (national funding 1.56 billion KRW, city funding 3.64 billion KRW), and ▲Olympic Memorial National Living Center renovation project (national funding 1.5 billion KRW, city funding 1.5 billion KRW), with a total budget of 15.2 billion KRW (national funding 5.16 billion KRW, city funding 10.04 billion KRW).
The Citizen Stadium and Park Chung-hee Gymnasium renovation projects include repairs to the main and auxiliary stadium tracks at Citizen Stadium, replacement of lighting towers with LEDs, installation of an electronic scoreboard in the main stadium, and replacement of heating and cooling systems at Park Chung-hee Gymnasium. These improvements are expected to transform the facilities into venues suitable for the upcoming Provincial Sports Festival and the Asian Athletics Championships.
Additionally, the Olympic Memorial National Living Center renovation project involves seismic reinforcement and refurbishment of the building, which is over 30 years old, to protect the facility in the event of an earthquake and prevent large-scale casualties, thereby providing a safe and comfortable sports space.
Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, “With these three selected projects, we will be fully prepared to improve sports facility infrastructure and leap forward as an international sports city. We will continue to make every effort to be selected for various national sports facility support projects in the future.”
