Hyundai Mobis, SKT and 8 Others Overcome Economic Crisis with 94 Consecutive Quarters of Profitability

CEO Score Survey... "17 Companies Including Samsung Electronics Turned to Deficit"

Hyundai Mobis, SK Telecom, Korea Zinc, Shinsegae, and seven other companies have recorded 94 consecutive quarters of profits from 2000 to the second quarter of this year. They have maintained profitability despite challenges such as the subprime mortgage crisis, the European debt crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic.


The Corporate Data Research Institute CEO Score announced on the 13th the results of an investigation into the individual financial statements of 352 companies among the top 500 domestic companies that submitted business reports for the second quarter. The companies that recorded 94 consecutive quarters of profits from 2000, when quarterly reports began to be submitted to the Financial Supervisory Service, to the second quarter of this year were KT&G, SK Telecom, Handsome, Korea Zinc, S-1, CJ ENM, Shinsegae, Hyundai Mobis, Yuhan Corporation, and Kookdo Chemical, totaling 10 companies.

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance (93 quarters), Kumho Petrochemical (91 quarters), Kwangdong Pharmaceutical (90 quarters), Korea Steel (90 quarters), LG Household & Health Care (89 quarters), NCSoft (88 quarters), GS EPS (87 quarters), LS Electric (87 quarters), Naver (86 quarters), Kakao (86 quarters), Hyundai Engineering & Construction (86 quarters), and POSCO International (86 quarters) have also continued their streaks of consecutive quarterly profits.


Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, GS EPS, and Naver have recorded profits every quarter since they began submitting quarterly reports. LG Household & Health Care and Hyundai Department Store have also maintained profitability since their establishment (or spin-off). Including these companies, 69 companies (19.6%) have recorded consecutive profits for more than 10 years (40 quarters) recently.

Since the second half of last year, many companies have turned to losses as the global economic downturn and semiconductor market slump intensified.


Companies that turned to losses after the second half of last year, breaking their consecutive profit streaks, include Samsung Electronics (55 quarters), LX Hausys (54 quarters), Hyundai Engineering (53 quarters), TKG Taekwang (45 quarters), Pulmuone Foods (45 quarters), Hana Securities (40 quarters), SK Hynix (39 quarters), Shinhan Investment Corp. (35 quarters), GS Construction (35 quarters), Eugene Investment & Securities (34 quarters), Samsung Securities (33 quarters), Daol Investment & Securities (33 quarters), Ebest Investment & Securities (28 quarters), Deutsche Motors (26 quarters), Daechang (23 quarters), Hi Investment & Securities (21 quarters), and Hyundai GEF Holdings (21 quarters), totaling 17 companies (4.8%).


Sixty companies (17%) recorded operating losses in the second quarter. Hanwha Ocean (11 quarters), Korea Electric Power Corporation (10 quarters), Korea District Heating Corporation (9 quarters), LG Energy Solution and HL Mando (8 quarters) have been mired in losses every quarter for more than two years (8 quarters).
