Governor Park stated that he formulated the development plan after hearing about the various difficulties, interests, and aspirations for regional development experienced by residents of the eastern area during a dialogue with citizens at the end of May.
"Although the rebound of Gyeongnam's economy is evident through various economic indicators one year after the launch of the 8th local government, the province's attention to the eastern and northwestern regions is relatively lacking compared to the central region, which has developed continuously based on the Changwon National Industrial Complex, the western region where the aerospace complex city development plan is underway, and the southern coastal area scheduled for national support," he explained.
Governor Park emphasized, "About one million people, accounting for one-third of Gyeongnam residents, live in the eastern Gyeongnam area including Gimhae, Miryang, and Yangsan, but the region's identity is somewhat weak due to its proximity to large cities like Busan and Ulsan. We aim to expand transportation infrastructure, medical and welfare services, and tourism to establish a one-day living zone within the province."
According to the announcement, Gyeongnam Province will invest 14.84 trillion KRW, including national funds, by 2030 to improve railway and road networks to expand transportation infrastructure in Eastern Gyeongnam.
The province plans to establish a one-hour living zone in the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (Boo-Ul-Gyeong) area by expanding and opening the following railways: ▲Southeastern Regional Circular Metropolitan Railway ▲Busan~Yangsan~Ulsan Metropolitan Railway ▲Yangsan Urban Railway.
They will create the shortest-distance transportation network through projects such as ▲Gimhae~Miryang Expressway ▲Local Routes 60 and 69 ▲Sangbuk~Ungsang Road ▲Construction and extension of the Hamyang~Ulsan Expressway, and promote human and material exchanges by building road networks connecting industrial complexes and ports inside and outside the province.
The province will also implement 15 major projects targeting the three cities of Gimhae, Miryang, and Yangsan.
In Gimhae, they will establish the ▲Gyeongnam Global Convergence Content Industry Town ▲Liquefied Hydrogen Cluster and support Gimhae to play a central role as a logistics city behind the Tri-port.
To provide medical services for vulnerable groups, a public medical center will be promptly built, and the Gyeongnam Global Harmony Center will be established as a hub for foreigner policies in Gyeongnam Province.
In Miryang, the first phase of the ongoing Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex will be completed, and the second phase will be promoted in connection with the government’s opportunity development special zone.
They will also establish ▲Nano Material and Product Safety Evaluation Support Center ▲Construct a bridge for entry into the Smart Farm Innovation Valley ▲Adjust and expand the route of Local Route 1051 between Miryang and Danjang ▲Attract the Southern Region National Forest Leisure Sports Center.
In Yangsan, the vacant land of Pusan National University in Yangsan will be developed in connection with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s spatial innovation zone pilot project.
They plan to create ▲Research and Development (R&D) Complex ▲Residential Complex ▲Cultural and Arts Center ▲Park ▲Yangsan Arboretum and support the Hoeya River Renaissance project promoted by Yangsan City.
They will promote the upgrade of Local Route 1028 between Sangbuk and Ungsang to a national road to connect the east and west separated areas of Yangsan.
Governor Park said, "We will do our best to secure national funds and pass preliminary feasibility studies to implement the development plan. We are striving to develop the entire Gyeongnam region, including the eastern and northwestern areas, and will actively support each region and city/county to carry out distinctive development in the future."
