Democratic Party Lawmaker, KBS Radio Interview
"Should End Goal-less Fast and Focus on National Assembly Audit"
On the 7th, Lee Won-wook, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said to party leader Lee Jae-myung, "It would be better to end the hunger strike and have Leader Lee make a decision himself."
On the same day, Lee appeared on KBS Radio's 'Choi Kyung-young's Strongest Current Affairs' and said, "Despite the prosecution's all-out investigation and the political prosecution's excesses, including 400 search and seizures, the actions Leader Lee wants to take feel to the public like 'everything leads to shielding oneself from prosecution.'
Lee acknowledged the sincerity of Leader Lee's choice of a hunger strike as a means of fighting against the government and ruling party but pointed out that the goal is unclear. He said, "It's very unfortunate. Self-harming protest methods like hunger strikes should be a last resort," adding, "I think Leader Lee threw this as a last resort against the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's mismanagement, so in that sense, I can understand the sincerity."
However, he added, "The problem is what the goal is. As soon as the hunger strike started, there was a lot of criticism in the media, and there is no possibility that President Yoon Seok-yeol will change."
Lee said, "In the past, if this happened, the ruling party leader would come, or the government's senior secretary for political affairs would come to stop it, but now it seems almost ignored," adding, "There are nightly candlelight rallies at the National Assembly, but the number of participants is rapidly decreasing, and the momentum is lost. There are health issues like diabetes, so I wonder what meaning continuing the hunger strike in this condition has."
He continued, "It would be better to end the hunger strike immediately and focus on what can be done with the 168 seats in the regular National Assembly," saying, "There are many things that can be done and talked about regarding the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's mismanagement, and especially since the regular National Assembly and the audit sessions create a much more favorable environment for the opposition party, it would be better to focus there."
Regarding Leader Lee's statement the previous day that "If someone acts against the national interest and the people's welfare, they should be removed," implying presidential impeachment, Lee described it as "out of the blue." He said, "That issue should not be decided alone but should be properly discussed in a party caucus," adding, "Opinions can be gathered anytime, but suddenly throwing out that impeachment should be done inevitably feels abrupt."
