Blind Police Account Murder Threat Post... 30-Year-Old Creator Arrested

Over 100 Fake Accounts Created for Large Corporations and Public Institutions

A man in his 30s who was arrested after posting a stabbing threat on an online community under the name of an active police officer was caught by the police for creating and selling police accounts.

The Cyber Terror Investigation Unit of the National Police Agency announced on the 6th that they have arrested and are investigating Mr. A (35) on charges of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (intrusion) and obstruction of business by abandonment.

Mr. A is suspected of creating 100 Blind accounts marked as belonging to major domestic corporations and public institutions from late June to early August, and selling them on peer-to-peer trading sites, earning approximately 5 million KRW in illicit profits.

Police investigation revealed that Mr. A committed the crime by obtaining Blind verification through arbitrarily created email accounts. He created Blind accounts under the names of employees of major corporations as well as public institutions including the National Police Agency, selling each account for 40,000 to 50,000 KRW. It was confirmed that Mr. B, a man in his 30s who was arrested on the 24th of last month for posting a 'murder threat' on Blind impersonating a police officer, purchased a police agency account from Mr. A for 50,000 KRW around mid-July for the purpose of meeting someone.

The police believe that Mr. A, who works in the IT industry, discovered the method of committing the crime based on his knowledge of programming and email security. This method used by Mr. A is currently known to be impossible due to measures taken by Blind. The police have identified that there are about 100 additional accounts created using this method and have requested related information from Blind.

A police official stated, "We will continue to actively investigate and apprehend those who post murder threats to alleviate social anxiety."
