Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Eligible for Electricity Bill Discounts... Up to 16,000 KRW Off Per Month

You Can Now Choose Between Your Registered Address and Actual Residence

From now on, electricity bill discounts will be available for the actual residence of children under the age of 3. Until now, discounts were only applicable based on the registered address, but even if the application is made due to reasons such as grandparents taking care of an infant at a location other than the registered address, the discount benefits can be received.

On the 5th, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) announced that it will improve the system to allow welfare discounts on electricity bills for households with newborns to be applied to the place where the infant actually resides.

A KEPCO official explained, "This system improvement aims to reduce the burden of electricity bills and contribute to solving the low birthrate issue," adding, "It reflects the demands of customers and the National Assembly for welfare discounts to be applied to the actual residence in response to recent changes in childcare conditions."

Previously, welfare discounts were applied based on the registered address regardless of the actual childcare location for households with one or more infants under 3 years old from the date of birth. However, with this system improvement, discounts can also be applied when applying from the actual residence due to reasons such as grandparents taking care of the infant at a location other than the registered address.

Applications can be made through KEPCO Cyber Branch, KEPCO ON, KEPCO Customer Center, visiting any KEPCO branch nationwide, or by fax. When applying, the head of household (actual residence) must provide personal information to verify actual residence.

The discount will be applied from the month of application, and only one discount application is allowed for either the infant’s registered address or actual residence. A 30% discount on electricity bills can be received up to a limit of 16,000 KRW per month until the child turns 3 years old.

KEPCO operates the electricity bill welfare discount system to reduce energy cost burdens for policy support targets such as large families and households with three or more children, as well as socially vulnerable groups including persons with disabilities and basic livelihood security recipients. Additionally, households using 200 kWh or less per month among the welfare discount recipients receive an extra reduction (2,500 to 4,000 KRW). Especially during summer, when cooling devices like air conditioners are used frequently, the welfare discount limit for socially vulnerable groups has been expanded by about 20% compared to before.

KEPCO plans to operate welfare discount regulations that reflect reality to provide practical help to energy-vulnerable groups, ensuring that all customers in need receive benefits without omission.
