Former President Moon Jae-in Calls Lee Jae-myung, Who Is Fasting, for 1 Day
"Concerned About Ruling Party's Recklessness Causing Main Opposition Leader to Fast"
People Power Party Criticizes "Adding Shamelessness to Shamelessness"
Regarding former President Moon Jae-in calling and encouraging Lee Jae-myung, who began an indefinite hunger strike on the 1st, the Democratic Party attributed meaning by saying it would "be a hope for party members and the people," while the People Power Party belittled it as "fueling a bulletproof hunger strike show."
On the same day, Kwon Chil-seung, the chief spokesperson of the Democratic Party, held a briefing at the National Assembly and stated, "There was a phone call between Representative Lee and former President Moon around 3 p.m." It is known that former President Moon told Representative Lee, "I was worried and wanted to send my support from the heart, so I called," adding, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration's reckless actions are too severe, and it is concerning that the leader of the main opposition party is on a hunger strike."
Yoon Gun-young, a member of the National Assembly who served as the head of the State Affairs Situation Room at the Blue House during the Moon administration, conveyed the contents of the call, saying, "It appears that former President Moon, as a senior figure of the Democratic Party, is deeply saddened by the situation where the leader of the main opposition party has resorted to a hunger strike due to the Yoon administration's reckless actions," adding, "There were also words of concern, especially about Representative Lee not harming his health."
In response, Representative Lee said, "I apologize for causing worry. Thank you for calling. I will endure well," and added, "There was no other option left to choose." He further stated, "The administration's recklessness and regression are so severe that even the minimum order is not being maintained," and "They are destroying everything and are in a state of waging war against the people, so I have no choice but to look to the people."
The call lasted about 4 to 5 minutes. Chief spokesperson Kwon said, "Both are great politicians who represent and have represented the Democratic Party," and added, "The two share difficulties and concerns about the current government, and (former President Moon) worrying about Representative Lee's hunger strike will be a hope for our party members, supporters, and the people."
However, the People Power Party issued a statement criticizing, "Former President Moon has stepped up to fuel the bulletproof hunger strike show. Shamelessness added to shamelessness."
On the same day, Hwang Gyu-hwan, the senior deputy spokesperson, said in the statement, "Former President Moon Jae-in, who said he wanted to be forgotten but tirelessly responded to every issue to avoid being forgotten, has now even come out to support Representative Lee Jae-myung’s hunger strike show for his own protection," and pointed out, "As a former president and senior figure of the main opposition party, instead of criticizing the party leader’s absurd trick, he seems to be fueling it."
He also said, "The Democratic Party’s behavior of remaining silent and even supporting Representative Lee, who trivializes and privatizes the hunger strike like this, only shows that the democratization generation represented by the 586 generation has deteriorated into old habits," and criticized, "No matter how much they support Representative Lee’s bulletproof show, the irresponsibility that abandoned the people from the first day of the regular National Assembly session will not disappear, and anger toward the Moon administration, which brought incompetence and failures for five years, and the Democratic Party led by Representative Lee Jae-myung will only intensify."
