The live-action adaptation of the popular manga "One Piece" will be released on the online video streaming service (OTT) Netflix at 4 p.m. on the 31st.
Ranked alongside Naruto and Bleach as one of the three major Japanese shonen manga of the 2000s, "One Piece" began serialization in the Japanese magazine "Weekly Shonen Jump" in 1997 and gained popularity. The anime series has produced over 20 seasons, and 15 theatrical films have been made.
Netflix produced "One Piece" as a 10-episode live-action series. Matt Owens, writer of Marvel's The Defenders and Luke Cage, and Steven Maeda, producer of TV series Lost and CSI: Miami, participated, with original creator Eiichiro Oda serving as executive producer.
"One Piece" depicts the story of the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, who dreams of becoming the Pirate King by finding the treasure One Piece, as he sails the seas and embarks on adventures with his crew.
Actor I?aki Godoy plays Monkey D. Luffy, Arata Mackenyu plays Zoro, Taz Skylar plays Sanji, Emily Rudd plays Nami, and Jacob Romero Gibson plays Usopp.
The production cost reaches $150 million (approximately 200 billion KRW), making it the highest budget among Netflix original series productions.
Previously, live-action films such as "Death Note" and "Cowboy Bebop" did not receive favorable reviews. Since classic anime live-action projects have not achieved good results, attention is focused on how Netflix's adapted live-action "One Piece" will be received.
Overseas critics have praised the excellent adaptation for capturing the vast original work well. The cast, VFX (visual effects), and story have also received positive reviews, leading to speculation that it may break the "live-action curse."
