Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, is promoting a relay challenge and abalone consumption campaign to support abalone producers who are struggling due to the economic downturn and falling abalone prices.
According to the county on the 28th, the ‘Wando Seafood Consumption Promotion Relay Challenge’ will first be launched, involving Wando County Office, Wando County Council, various institutions, social organizations, and hometown associations.

The challenge will start with County Governor Shin Woo-cheol and be followed by Heo Gung-hee, Chairman of the Wando County Council, emphasizing the safety and excellence of Wando seafood to create an atmosphere that encourages consumption.
The ‘Citizen Participation 119 Project’ will also be carried out. This project encourages each household to purchase 1 kg of abalone 9 times, symbolizing ‘1’ household, ‘1’ kg of abalone, and ‘9’ purchases, aiming to support abalone producers facing difficulties due to price drops and to overcome the crisis together with citizens.
From the 1st to the 8th of next month, a ‘Sales Promotion to Help Abalone Producers’ will be held to sell abalone sized 11 to 13 pieces per kilogram, which are currently in surplus compared to other sizes.
The promotion will offer abalone at 29,000 KRW per 1 kg and 55,000 KRW per 2 kg to citizens, hometown associations, and major sister cities of Wando-gun.
Abalone orders can be placed through the Korean Abalone Distribution Association’s website or by phone.
Additionally, the county and related organizations plan to hang banners promoting the abalone sales event and information in various locations to encourage widespread participation in abalone consumption.
Governor Shin Woo-cheol stated, “We ask for your interest and participation in abalone consumption promotion activities so that we can overcome this crisis together with our citizens,” adding, “The county will also prepare and implement various measures to promote seafood consumption.”
