6th KCC Inauguration... First Meeting Appoints MBC Foundation and EBS Board Members

On the 28th, Lee Dong-kwan, the newly appointed Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, appointed replacement directors for the major shareholders of the Korean Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) and Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) at his first plenary meeting since taking office.

At the plenary meeting, the Korea Communications Commission resolved to appoint Professor Kang Kyu-hyung of Myongji University and former MBC Infrastructure Headquarters Director Kim Sung-geun as replacement directors for EBS and the Munhwa Broadcasting Culture Promotion Agency (MBC Foundation), respectively. These appointments are successors to the recently dismissed former EBS director Jung Mi-jung and former MBC Foundation chairman Kwon Tae-seon. The term of office for the newly appointed director Kang Kyu-hyung is until September 14, 2024, and for director Kim Sung-geun until August 12, 2024.

Additionally, the commission decided to exempt TV license fees for two months for TV sets in areas declared special disaster zones due to heavy rains, Typhoon Khanun, and crop cold damage caused by abnormal low temperatures last April.

The plenary meeting was held with a two-member system, attended by Chairman Lee and Standing Commissioner Lee Sang-in, as the successors for three standing commissioners whose terms had expired had not yet been appointed.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Lee said, "Although it is regrettable that we could not launch as a full team, we held this meeting to address urgent issues that had been postponed," adding, "I hope the Korea Communications Commission will be normalized quickly so that, as a complete body, it can engage in communication and cooperation through discussion and deliberation to reach conclusions."
