Increase in Travelers Wearing Swimsuits at Nude Beaches
Nudists Launch Campaign: "Please Respect Us"
Recently, naturists in Spain have been running a campaign urging people to take off their swimsuits at the beach, drawing attention. The goal is to change the attitude of travelers who visit nude beaches while wearing clothes.
On the 11th (local time), foreign media such as the UK’s The Guardian reported that the Naturist-Nudist Federation of Catalonia is conducting such a campaign at nude beaches.
Recently, in the Catalonia region, travelers have been entering and leaving nude beaches wearing swimsuits, which has made naturists uncomfortable. Local media have reported on this phenomenon, calling it the “Textile Invasion.”
Sejimon Rovira, the representative of the Naturist-Nudist Federation of Catalonia, pointed out, “People wearing clothes do not realize that they are making us uncomfortable,” adding, “It is a lack of respect.”
Travelers even mock people bathing nude or upload photos of them taken without consent onto social networks (SNS). Rovira said, “Unfortunately, women receive more attention or harassment,” and “They face discrimination twice, both as naturists and as women.”
The federation pointed to excessive growth in tourism and SNS as causes. Travel guides and influencers often introduce nude beaches simply as “quiet beaches with few people,” omitting proper explanations.
Ultimately, naturists in Catalonia have launched a counterattack to preserve the decades-old tradition of nude beaches. Recently, the Naturist-Nudist Federation of Catalonia sent a letter to the Catalonia government requesting a meeting to discuss the discrimination faced by naturists.
They also posted a self-produced campaign video online and plan to encourage changes in travelers’ perceptions through various offline activities, such as installing signs at nude beaches.
In an interview, Rovira emphasized, “It is very difficult to practice naturism surrounded by people wearing clothes,” adding, “That is why it is important to have spaces where the majority of people can be nude.”
He added, “Since we created nude beaches so as not to harm others, we hope others will respect us as well.”
