Hajongmok 1st Market to Prioritize Citizens' Lives and Safety in Response
Due to Typhoon 'Kanun', a total of 35 cases of physical damage, including soil erosion, occurred in Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam.
However, thanks to the city's thorough pre-inspections, monitoring, proactive and aggressive measures, combined with the cooperation of citizens, there were no casualties.
On the 23rd, Ha Jongmok, the first deputy mayor, held a briefing and stated that in the future, during typhoons or heavy rains, the city will prioritize the lives and safety of citizens and respond thoroughly.
Deputy Mayor Ha explained that among the total 35 cases of physical damage caused by heavy rain, the types of damage were 10 cases of soil erosion, 1 case of facility damage, 4 cases of flooding, 13 cases of stone wall collapse, 6 cases of embankment collapse, and 1 other case.
Most public facilities such as rivers have completed emergency repairs, and places requiring additional repairs will be promptly restored using disaster management funds and contingency funds.
For private facilities, a total of 29 cases of damage from flooding of houses and commercial buildings have been reported so far. After on-site inspections by the 31st, the support recipients will be confirmed, and contingency funds will be allocated to provide disaster relief funds (3 million KRW per household) starting from September 14.
Deputy Mayor Ha stated that 450 million KRW of contingency funds will be invested to restore forest roads and install check dams in erosion-prone stream areas starting in September. Regarding the recently raised issues about forest roads, 25 locations where forest roads have been opened will be designated as disaster-prone areas, and a disaster risk map showing the status of forest roads will be created to strengthen management.
In the long term, a full survey of all forest roads in the jurisdiction, including drainage ditches, will be conducted for comprehensive maintenance. Based on the survey results, cooperation with related agencies will be established to prepare measures to prevent recurrence.
The city plans to complete maintenance of temporary retention ponds and drainage channels by August to prepare for additional typhoons expected from August to October.
Deputy Mayor Ha said, "Due to the intensification of abnormal weather caused by recent global warming, there are limitations to the disaster response system established based on past weather data. We will carefully analyze and supplement the current disaster system, discuss with related agencies including police and fire departments, and strengthen the response system to prioritize the lives and safety of citizens and make every effort to protect them."
