Dongdaemun-gu Proposes New Single-Track Railway Line from Wangsimni to Cheongnyangni Station

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced that it held a meeting on the 16th to discuss the construction of a new single-track railway between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations on the Suin-Bundang Line. About 20 people attended the meeting, including Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, Heo Eun-ah, member of the People Power Party, Kim Kyung-jin, chairman of the People Power Party Dongdaemun-eul district committee, Lee Jae-seon, Dongdaemun-gu council member, and members of the Cheongnyangni Suin-Bundang Line Promotion Committee.

The Suin-Bundang Line originally operated from Incheon Station through Suwon Station and Gangnam-gu Office Station to Wangsimni Station, but since December 2018, it has been extended to Cheongnyangni Station. Currently, the service between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations runs only 9 times a day on weekdays (5 times on weekends) in one direction, causing frequent inconvenience for Dongdaemun-gu residents and citizens using Cheongnyangni Station, who must transfer by disembarking at Wangsimni Station from the Gyeongui-Jungang Line to the Suin-Bundang Line.

In response, in July 2021, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport included the ‘New Single-Track Railway Construction between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni Stations’ project as part of the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan. In December last year, the Korea Rail Network Authority signed a contract for a pre-feasibility study, which is currently underway.

During the meeting, opinions were exchanged regarding the project’s direction and ways to raise residents’ interest in the new single-track railway. The district office stated that if the new railway is constructed as planned and the frequency of trains between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations increases, it will greatly enhance convenience for residents and play a significant role in establishing a metropolitan transportation system centered on Cheongnyangni Station in the northeastern region.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “There is broad consensus on the necessity of constructing the new single-track railway between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations, so we expect good results. The district office will actively request related agencies to expedite the project and will also provide full administrative support during the project implementation process.”
