11 AM on the 7th at National Theater Haerom
'Conductor Project' led by Conductor Chae Gil-ryong
Singer Jo Sung-mo will meet with the audience again after a long time on the stage of the National Theater of Korea’s National Gugak Orchestra 'Noon Concert'.
The National Theater announced on the 18th that it will hold the National Gugak Orchestra brunch concert 'Noon Concert' at the Haeoreum Theater on September 7. Jo Sung-mo will perform his representative songs such as "To Your Side," an insert song from the drama "Lovers in Paris," his debut song "To Heaven," and "Determination," well known for its collar-shaking choreography, arranged for gugak orchestra in the 'Noon Star' corner featuring stars from various fields including popular music, pansori, and musicals.
Started in 2009, the 'Noon Concert' is a flagship regular performance of the National Theater, loved for its easy and friendly commentary and diverse programs. Announcer Lee Geum-hee hosts the commentary, helping the audience’s understanding with her uniquely soft and comfortable presentation style, making it a popular program.
The September 'Noon Concert' begins with 'Noon’s 3 Minutes.' This corner introduces works from the '3-Minute Orchestral' series, which commissions young composers to create short orchestral pieces around three minutes long. The piece "Adjustment" composed by Choi Deok-ryeol will be performed. Premiered in 2019 as part of the '3-Minute Orchestral' commission, "Adjustment" conveys the meaning of instruments helping each other to adjust (助) sounds and illuminate (照) their existence within the gugak orchestra composed of various instruments and sounds.
The following 'Noon Collaboration' stage features collaborations among members of the National Gugak Orchestra. Flautist Wi Jae-young and principal daegeum player Park Kyung-min will perform the double concerto for daegeum and piri, "Cheongsachorong." Composed by Choi Ji-woon and commissioned for the 'Noon Concert,' "Cheongsachorong" captures the visual image of a softly glowing lantern in the dark night and the warm feelings evoked by looking at it.
'Noon Journey' is a corner where traditional music and folk songs from various countries around the world are reinterpreted by the gugak orchestra and enjoyed along with video. In this performance, the audience will travel to California while listening to "Sky, Earth, and Sea," arranged by Hong Min-woong. The piece combines the American Western folk song "Clementine," which tells the story of a miner mourning his deceased daughter, with the Korean folk song "Doraji Taryeong," expressing a hope for a bright tomorrow beyond loss. Accompanying the music is footage of California’s lush scenery provided by the California Tourism Board.
In 'Noon’s Choice,' which features gugak orchestral pieces selected by the conductor, the audience can enjoy "Arirang Road - Diaspora," composed by Yang Bang-ean. The piece conveys the pain and longing for their homeland of the Koryo-saram who were forcibly relocated to Central Asia, set to the melody of "Arirang." Premiered in 2019 as part of "Yang Bang-ean and the National Gugak Orchestra - Into the Light," the original piece lasts about 40 minutes across seven movements but will be condensed into a roughly 10-minute version for this performance.
In the second half of the year, the 'Noon Concert' stage will be conducted monthly by three conductors selected for the National Theater’s 'Value-Creating Conductor Project' with the National Gugak Orchestra. This month, Chae Gil-ryong, who graduated with a master’s degree in gugak conducting from Seoul National University’s College of Music and is actively working as a guest conductor for several gugak orchestras including KBS Gugak Orchestra, Seoul Youth Gugak Orchestra, and Sejong Gugak Orchestra, will take the podium.
At 11 a.m., snacks produced by social enterprises will be provided for the audience visiting the venue at a time when they might feel peckish. Additionally, the 'Noon Stamp Challenge' event continues, offering small souvenirs to audience members who collect tickets from all six 'Noon Concert' performances this year.
