Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was recently indicted for the fourth time, is expected to be temporarily detained in a notorious jail in the state of Georgia, according to foreign media reports.
On the 16th (local time), BBC and CNN reported that the Fulton County Sheriff's Office in Atlanta, Georgia, stated in a press release the previous day that "a total of 19 defendants indicted for exerting pressure to overturn the Georgia vote results in the 2020 U.S. presidential election are expected to be held at the Fulton County Jail."
The 19 defendants include former President Trump, with the other 18 being his associates and co-defendants. However, the Sheriff's Office left room for changes in some circumstances, noting that this is an unprecedented case.
Former President Trump narrowly lost in Georgia, a battleground state, during the 2020 presidential election. He was indicted on the 14th for allegedly pressuring Brad Raffensperger, Georgia's Secretary of State, in early January 2021 to "find 11,780 votes" to overturn the election results. Prosecutors have notified him to appear by the 25th of this month.
In the United States, criminal defendants awaiting trial without bail, those who have been arrested, or those sentenced to less than one year are held in jails. Jails differ from prisons, which are facilities where convicted criminals serve sentences longer than one year.
The Fulton County Jail, where former President Trump is expected to be held, is known for its very poor conditions. According to BBC reports, it was established in 1985 with a capacity of about 1,300 inmates, but in recent years, more than 3,000 inmates have been held there.
Due to unsanitary living conditions, COVID-19 and other diseases have spread, and inmates are reported to suffer from severe malnutrition. Six inmates have died in this jail so far this year.
Some predict that former President Trump may avoid detention at the Fulton County Jail. He has previously received special treatment, such as being exempted from mugshot photos or not being handcuffed, unlike other defendants.
