Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center Differentiates Itself from Other Institutions by Focusing on General Middle-Aged Population
High Response through Various Programs Tailored to the Health, Mental, and Relationship Needs of Single-Person Households
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) is promoting various events to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the Single-Person Household Support Center.
Opened as an independent center in August 2022, the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center has distinguished itself from existing welfare facilities by targeting a different support group and focusing on projects aimed at the preventive resolution of the increasing issues faced by single-person households.
While existing welfare facilities have concentrated on vulnerable middle-aged groups, elderly living alone, and youth, the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center operates programs targeting the general middle-aged population who may be at potential risk of poverty at any time.
Based on a survey conducted by the district in November 2022, the center analyzed the actual needs of single-person household residents in the area and developed programs accordingly. Due to these efforts, over 5,000 residents participated in the center’s programs over the past year, receiving significant positive feedback.
Representative programs include ▲ Health Maru project, an exercise and habit formation program to improve the health of single-person households ▲ Drawing Maru project, an art therapy, stress relief, and emotional stability program for mental health recovery ▲ Seongdong Dangdang project, which offers counseling, education, and leisure programs for relationship health.
In addition, the Single-Person Household Support Center is also committed to generational integration, community linkage and cooperation, and volunteer work. In particular, the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Group, mainly composed of university students and young adults majoring in health and medical fields, actively conducts volunteer activities such as home medical visits and oral health education.
From the 28th of this month to the 3rd of next month, the center will hold various events with single-person households to commemorate its 1st anniversary and to revitalize center operations, including discovering new single-person households.
On the 29th of this month, a health lecture by diet scientist Choi Gyeom will be held in the large auditorium on the 3rd floor of Seongdong-gu Office. The lecture will cover topics such as improving body metabolism and healthy habits to maintain the health of single-person households and promote scientific dieting.
On the 30th, a lecture will be held to promote the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center. Members currently using the center will invite acquaintances to experience single-person household programs such as drawing and kalimba performances. This aims to reduce the burden of visiting the center and actively recruit new members.
Finally, on September 2nd, a walking event for single-person household residents will be held. The walking course starts from under Gosan Bridge along Cheonggyecheon Stream, returns at Salgot Sports Park, and goes back to under Gosan Bridge. The event will also teach proper walking methods and offer health-related booth experiences to promote broad relationship building among single-person households. Those wishing to participate in the anniversary events can contact the Seongdong-gu Women and Family Division or the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center by phone.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We will spare no support so that single-person household residents, who have become a representative household type in our society, can establish themselves as healthy members of society and feel the joy of being together.”
