Son Heung-min Now 'Captain Son'... Selected as Tottenham's New Captain

The Second Korean Captain in the EPL After Park Ji-sung
Tottenham Manager: "An Ideal Choice"

Son Heung-min (31), captain of the South Korean national football team, has also been appointed captain of his club, Tottenham Hotspur (hereafter Tottenham) in the English Premier League (EPL).

Tottenham officially announced this on the club's website on the 12th (local time).

Tottenham is about to part ways with Hugo Lloris, who served as captain from the 2015-16 season until last season. Harry Kane, Son Heung-min’s "soul partner," was the top candidate for the next captain but recently transferred to Bayern Munich.

As a result, predictions both inside and outside the club suggested that Son Heung-min would naturally become the next captain. Aside from Lloris and Kane, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have been with the team longer than Son, but in terms of contribution and symbolism to the team, they fall far short of Son Heung-min.

Son Heung-min is the second Korean to be officially appointed captain of an EPL team, following Park Ji-sung. Previously, Park Ji-sung served as captain for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) during the 2012-2013 season.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said, “Choosing Son Heung-min, who has excellent leadership, as the new captain is an ideal choice,” adding, “Everyone knows that Son Heung-min is a world-class player.”

He continued, “Son Heung-min commands respect from everyone in the locker room,” and “We selected him considering his role as captain of the Korean national team and his achievements here (at Tottenham).”

Son Heung-min said, “I am surprised and proud to become captain of a big team like Tottenham,” and “I have already told the players that everyone should feel and act like a captain both on and off the pitch.” He emphasized, “In the new season, I will give my all for this jersey and armband.”

Meanwhile, midfielder James Maddison and defender Cristian Romero were chosen as vice-captains to support Son Heung-min.

Tottenham is scheduled to play the opening round of the 2023-2024 season against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, UK, at 10 p.m. on the 13th (Korean time).
