Changwon Special City "We Will Forever Remember the Noble
Sacrifices of Our Veterans"
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held the 25th Jindong-ri District Battle Victory Commemoration Ceremony at the Marine Corps Jindong-ri District War Memorial in Jinbuk-myeon, Masanhappo-gu, to honor the veterans who sacrificed their lives during the Jindong-ri District Battle in the Korean War and to celebrate the victory.
The ceremony held on the 12th was organized by the Marine Corps Changwon Masan United Veterans Association and attended by about 300 people, including Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, National Assembly member Choi Hyungdu, and members of the Marine Corps Veterans Association.
Changwon Special City held the 73rd anniversary ceremony commemorating the victory of the Jindong-ri District battle.
Notably, during the event, Mayor Hong was appointed as an honorary marine in recognition of his contributions to the development of the Changwon Masan United Veterans Association.
The Jindong-ri District Battle was the first counteroffensive operation by the United Nations forces after the outbreak of the Korean War in August, where the US 25th Infantry Division and the Republic of Korea Marine Corps halted and repelled the momentum of the North Korean 6th Division advancing toward Busan via Masan. It is regarded as a battle that defended the western side of the strategically important Nakdong River defense line.
At that time, the Marine Corps unit led by Kim Seong-eun launched a surprise attack on the reconnaissance battalion of the North Korean 6th Division in Jindong-ri, successfully blocking the invasion and achieving the greatest military accomplishment since the founding of the corps, earning all soldiers a one-rank promotion.
Mayor Hong said, “The precious fighting spirit of the veterans who ran into the fire for their homeland ultimately became the proud victorious history of the Jindong-ri District and served as a decisive turning point in achieving the prosperity of today’s Republic of Korea. I will strive to spread the culture of honoring veterans so that the spirit of patriotism of those who sacrificed for the nation and people will be eternally passed down to future generations.”
