Be Cautious of Heat Exchangers and Filter Adsorption When Cooking with Oily Ingredients
On the 11th, Samsung Electronics revealed tips to avoid a shockingly high electricity bill from air conditioner use through its newsroom.
Samsung Electronics developers advised, as a way to save on costs while maintaining a comfortable temperature, "If you are going out for more than 90 minutes, turn it off; if you are away for less than 90 minutes, leave it on."
They compared experimental values based on the duration of absence while preparing a paper presented at the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers conference. The purpose was to find out how much energy is saved when the air conditioner is turned off and then restarted versus when it is kept running continuously.
When going out for 30 minutes and then turning the air conditioner back on, power consumption increased by 5% compared to continuous operation. For 60 minutes away, it increased by 2%. If the absence exceeds 90 minutes, it is better to turn off the air conditioner and then turn it back on.
Engineer Seongjin Lim explained, "Recently, air conditioners are released with an 'inverter system' that automatically minimizes operation once the set temperature is reached," adding, "Turning it off and on again for a short time consumes more energy to lower the raised indoor temperature again." Engineer Jun Hwang advised, "The larger the space, the greater the volume the air conditioner needs to cool, so opening only the necessary areas can reduce energy consumption."
In an experiment comparing energy consumption according to installation area (based on an air conditioner set to 24 degrees Celsius), energy consumption was 185% for 81㎡, 153% for 66㎡, and 100% for 45㎡. In dehumidification mode, when the same temperature was set in a humid environment simulating the rainy season, the humidity removal efficiency improved by about 2.7 times compared to cooling mode.
When operating the air conditioner, caution is also needed when cooking oily foods such as fish or Samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly). Engineer Hyungkyu Jo said, "Cooking oily foods generates 'oil mist' (oil vapor). While running the air conditioner or air purifier can remove some of the oil mist, if it adheres to the heat exchanger or filter, it can cause performance degradation due to filter clogging and unpleasant odors. Therefore, it is advised to open windows for ventilation."
