Yangcheon-gu Operates 'Climate Change Education Visiting Schools' Program

Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that from August 16 to October 13, over 500 elementary and middle school students will participate in the ‘Climate Change Education Visiting Schools’ program, which delivers the seriousness of the climate crisis and practical energy-saving methods in an easy-to-understand way.

This education program is conducted under the theme ‘Causes and Responses to Climate Change,’ with environmental education expert instructors visiting schools directly to teach.

The curriculum consists of a total 90-minute course including ‘Essential Theoretical Education (45 minutes)’ covering ▲weather and climate change ▲impacts and causes of climate change ▲practices to prevent global warming ▲energy saving and production methods ▲understanding fine dust, all aimed at carbon neutrality, and ‘Experiential Education (45 minutes)’ where students create solar power kits and eco-bags to contribute to reducing single-use products in daily life.

The education period runs from August 16, after the summer vacation ends, until October 13. The target schools are five elementary and middle schools within the district selected through prior application. The district plans to assign instructors to additional schools that wish to apply during the education period and conduct lectures accordingly.

Meanwhile, over the past three years, the district has operated the ‘Climate Change Education Visiting Schools’ program 179 times, producing a total of over 2,900 graduates. In addition, various environmental culture programs are being run to cultivate climate crisis awareness and establish proper environmental values among future generations, including summer vacation resource circulation experience classes, children’s environmental musical puppet shows, the experiential environmental culture festival ‘Zero Yangcheon,’ and environmental literary schools.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “Through this climate change education, I hope our youth, who will lead the future generation, deeply realize the importance of environmental conservation and become more actively engaged in practicing it in their daily lives.”
