Planned Invitational Exhibition at Gyeongsan Infoke Art Center Until the 26th
A planned invitational exhibition by artist Moon Bori, who weaves traditional threads to present abstract works, will be held until the 26th at the Infog Art Center in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk.
Artist Moon Bori will exhibit 30 bas-relief works woven from traditional threads such as samsil and mosisil, as well as rayon and cotton threads. The theme the artist explores is the "Relation of Time."
Samsil and mosisil are materials that our ancestors used daily but have now disappeared and are being forgotten. Samsil is produced by elderly women in weaving villages who grow, steam, dry, sit around peeling, tearing, and connecting the hemp fibers.
The artist presents works that mediate these traditional threads with more commonly used materials today, such as rayon and cotton threads, to contemplate the relation of time. By structurally connecting the soft and radiant rayon thread with the rough and rustic samsil continuously in one space, the work recalls the relational coexistence of materials between the past and the present.
The works take the form of geometric bas-reliefs expressing the "continuity of time and material" that connects past and present through thread, by placing materials with different characteristics side by side to endure, allowing the experience of a coexistence state between familiar yet unfamiliar materials.
Moon Bori graduated from the Department of Textile Arts at Hongik University and its graduate school, and majored in textile design at the graduate school of Philadelphia University in the United States. Realizing the beauty of artistic expression possible through weaving as contemporary art, she presents this in her works and shows the extensibility of her practice through various experiments and variations incorporating weaving.
Moon Bori's works were selected this year for the Arts and Technology Convergence Project by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service and have been invited to planned exhibitions at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art and Seoul Culture Station 284. Last year, she was selected for the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture's Art Creation Support Project. In addition, Moon has held 11 solo exhibitions and participated in over 80 planned and group exhibitions. She has also participated in numerous domestic and international exhibitions such as Paris Maison&Objet, Cheongju International Craft Biennale, and Beijing Tapestry Biennale.
