Last month, many farms suffered flood damage due to heavy rain. In particular, cucumbers are facing difficulties in shipment due to flood damage in the summer production area of Gangwon Province and insufficient sunlight, causing prices to surge. According to price information from the Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation, the average price of premium grade Baekdadagi cucumbers (50 pieces) on August 8 was 32,827 KRW, an increase of about 60% compared to the previous month.
Lotte Mart announced on the 9th that from the 10th to the 12th, for three days, it will sell 'Good Price Cucumbers' at prices lower than the market rate at a total of 14 stores, including Seoul Station branch, Junggye branch, and Zetaflex branch, in partnership with the Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation and Garak Market wholesale corporation 'Donghwa Cheonggwa.'
This event is part of Lotte Mart's 'Good Price Agricultural Products Project' in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, selecting five frequently purchased agricultural products (radish, napa cabbage, onion, green onion, cucumber) that have recently seen price surges and supplying them at prices lower than the market rate. Starting with onions last year, and green onions in March this year, these products were sold at prices below market rates, gaining great popularity among consumers.
The Good Price Cucumbers are priced at 750 KRW each when purchasing two or more, which is about 36% cheaper than the average retail price of cucumbers in Seoul at the end of July, which was 1,178 KRW each. To offer affordable cucumbers, Donghwa Cheonggwa, a wholesale corporation in Garak Market, reduced commissions on the supply from production areas, and the Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation supported logistics transportation costs from the production areas to Lotte Mart’s logistics centers, contributing to cost reduction. Lotte Mart also set the selling price with minimal profit margin, enabling the benefits of cost reduction to be passed on to customers through the Good Price Cucumbers.
Additionally, Lotte Mart sells B+ grade products, which are slightly smaller or have minor surface defects but have no difference in taste or nutrition compared to regular vegetables and fruits, under the names 'Win-Win Vegetables' and 'Win-Win Fruits' at prices lower than normal retail prices. On the 21st and 22nd of last month, cucumbers with surface blemishes or irregular shapes caused by heavy rain were sold as 'Win-Win Dadagi Cucumbers' at half the market price, gaining popularity to the extent that the prepared quantity was sold out by morning.
