As the extreme heat continues these days, Dobong-gu's cooling shelter ‘Hyuga (休家)’ prepared for residents is attracting attention.

The cooling shelter ‘Hyuga’ is Seoul's first new welfare model for the heatwave season, open to anyone. It expands the scope of welfare recipients beyond vulnerable groups to all Dobong residents, implementing a universal cooling welfare model.

The district utilized the 1st and 2nd floors of the existing Dobong-gu Office building to create a total of 11 rooms. It opened on July 10 and operates daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until September 30.

The first floor includes a children's room with an air bounce ▲ a reading room for quiet reading or studying ▲ a hobby room where residents can enjoy games like Janggi (Korean chess), Baduk (Go), and board games.

The second floor features a video exercise room where visitors can follow workout videos ▲ a chat room for free conversation ▲ two healing rooms equipped with massage chairs, which are the most popular ▲ a quiet and comfortable nap room ▲ a selfie room themed as a self-photo studio ▲ and a video room for watching movies or dramas.

A Dobong resident, Mr. A, who frequently visits the themed cooling shelter, said, “Other cooling shelters are dull spaces where you can only escape the heat, but here you can watch TV and use massage chairs when tired, so I use it often.”

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “The themed cooling shelter we created this time is a multi-purpose relaxation space where residents can enjoy various facilities within the office building, such as libraries and cafes,” adding, “As the shelter’s name is Hyuga (休家), meaning ‘resting home,’ we hope residents exhausted and struggling from the heatwave will visit and rest comfortably as if at their own home.”
