AI Video Production on Independence Movement Martyrs Including Son Byeong-hui and Lee Jun Restored Portrait of Euiam Son Byeong-hui Using AI Technology

Seoul's Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) has produced a video restoring the images of patriotic martyrs who sacrificed for Korea's independence, such as Uiam Son Byeong-hui, using AI (artificial intelligence) technology.

"Singing 'Manse' (Hurrah) does not immediately bring independence. But we must awaken the spirit of independence in the hearts of our people, so we must definitely sing 'Manse' on this occasion."

This was the statement made by Uiam (義菴) Son Byeong-hui (1861?1922) to the leaders of Cheondogyo before the March 1st Independence Declaration.

The restored video created to honor the spirit of independence is based on the famous quotes and old photographs of these patriotic martyrs. By applying AI technology, the video brings vividness and audiovisual effects as if the martyrs are actually speaking.

The video features 14 martyrs resting in Gangbuk-gu: ▲Hyeongok Yang Il-dong (fighter in the anti-Japanese and anti-dictatorship democratization movement), ▲Pyeongsan Shin Ha-gyun (patriot who led independence and democracy struggles), ▲Gangjae Shin Suk (vanguard of armed anti-Japanese struggle and national integration movement), ▲Sangsan Kim Do-yeon (key figure in the Tokyo February 8 Independence Declaration), ▲Gain Kim Byeong-ro (first Chief Justice of the Republic of Korea and anti-Japanese lawyer), ▲Simsan Kim Chang-suk (the last scholar who fought against the times), ▲Dongam Seo Sang-il (independence activist devoted to youth education), ▲Danju Yoo Rim (anarchist revolutionary who wished for national independence), ▲Chunheon Lee Myeong-ryong (Christian representative of the March 1st Independence Movement), ▲Haegong Shin Ik-hee (first Vice Speaker of the National Assembly who dedicated himself to independence and democratization), ▲Seongjae Lee Si-young (first Vice President of the Republic of Korea who worked to train independence fighters), ▲Mongyang Yeo Un-hyeong (revolutionary ahead of his time), ▲Uiam Son Byeong-hui (leader of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and March 1st Movement), ▲Ilseong Lee Jun (special envoy of Emperor Gojong who declared independence at The Hague), and 17 members of the Liberation Army martyrs who were originally buried in Suyu-dong but have since been reinterred at Daejeon National Cemetery.

The district plans to screen the videos of these martyrs at the Gangbuk-gu Modern History Memorial Hall and use them as promotional materials on the district office's electronic billboards, IPTV, and more. The videos can be viewed on Gangbuk-gu's official YouTube channel, Gangbuk-gu Smart Tourism Electronic Map, or the Culture and Tourism section of the Gangbuk-gu website.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, "This video was produced to honor the spirit of the martyrs who sacrificed for the restoration of national sovereignty and the establishment of the Republic of Korea government. We hope people will experience Gangbuk-gu's historical and cultural programs such as the Stamp Healing Tour and Modern History Mystery Travel, and feel the history of Korea's modern era here in Gangbuk-gu along with these lifelike videos of the martyrs."
