Daejeon Teacher Stabbed: Mother Appears at Police for Witness Interview

A man in his 20s, Mr. A, who broke into a high school in Daejeon and attacked his former teacher with a weapon, claimed that the reason for his crime was "due to bad memories at the time." Meanwhile, his mother reportedly stated that her son's claim is a 'delusion.'

On the 7th, according to the police and Yonhap News, Mr. A's mother, who is detained on suspicion of attempted murder, made this statement during a witness investigation at the Daejeon Daedeok Police Station, lending weight to the claim that Mr. A's motive for the crime may be related to a mental illness.

Mr. A is said to have claimed that, besides teacher Mr. B, whom he stabbed with a weapon, he has 'bad memories' of some other teachers who worked at his alma mater. Those teachers are also included among the witnesses being investigated. From 2021 until last year, Mr. A received psychiatric diagnoses at a hospital near his residence and was advised by doctors to be hospitalized for treatment, but it has been confirmed that he neither was hospitalized nor received treatment. During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he "did not receive treatment because he did not want to."

It was also revealed that Mr. A has other prior convictions unrelated to this incident. The police plan to specifically ascertain the truth of Mr. A's claims and the detailed motive for the crime through witness investigations. On the morning of the 4th, Mr. A is suspected of breaking into a high school in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, stabbing teacher Mr. B (49) seven times on the face, chest, and arm with a weapon, and fleeing. After the crime, he escaped the school, took a taxi, and was caught about 7 to 8 km from the school near an apartment complex 2 hours and 17 minutes later. A bloodstained weapon and other items were found in the bag Mr. A was carrying at the time.

At the time of the incident, Mr. A passed through the school’s main gate without any particular resistance, went up to the second-floor teachers' office, and looked for Mr. B. After hearing that Mr. B was in class, Mr. A waited in the hallway, and after the class ended, he found Mr. B washing his hands at the teachers' office sink and attacked him with the weapon. Mr. B, who was stabbed, barely managed to escape to the administrative office and was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. Although Mr. B was once in critical condition, his condition has somewhat improved, with partial recovery of consciousness. However, it is known that he is still unable to provide a victim statement. The police stated that once Mr. B’s condition improves enough to give a statement, they will focus on investigating the truth of Mr. A’s claims and the detailed motive for the crime.
