Support for SCEMS Implementation and Carbon Reduction Activities
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia announced on the 28th that they have established a blockchain-based automated system for managing carbon emission histories of partner companies (SCEMS) and are strengthening support for carbon reduction activities targeting the supply chain.
SCEMS is a system that integrates and manages carbon emission histories generated throughout the entire process, from raw material extraction to parts and vehicle manufacturing and transportation. It is distributed free of charge to partner companies that make up the automotive supply chain to support carbon emission reduction activities across the entire supply chain.
The most notable feature is the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) modeling to reflect the diverse industrial site characteristics of hundreds of partner companies. When partners input the essential data suited to their own situations into the system, the AI automatically provides information on carbon emissions and future predicted values.
Partner companies that previously could only calculate their carbon footprint with the help of external experts due to a lack of specialized personnel can now set their own goals and manage reduction activities independently. This is expected to reduce costs as well as enhance corporate capabilities.
The company applied blockchain technology, which is tamper-proof, to SCEMS.
A Hyundai Motor Company and Kia representative stated, “The significance of eco-friendly products is gradually expanding to include the product lifecycle and supply chain,” adding, “We will take the lead in building an eco-friendly supply chain across the entire value chain to practice carbon neutrality.”
