"Family Notification? The Devil Would Cry" Fake Donation Box Appears in Sillim Memorial Space

Man Estimated in His 60s Installs 'For Bereaved Families' Donation Box
Turns Out Unauthorized... "Humanity Is Disappearing"

A 'fake donation box' appeared at the victim memorial space set up near the scene of the stabbing rampage in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul.

On the 26th, a photo of a donation box placed at the Sillim Station memorial space was posted on an online community. In the photo, among the countless chrysanthemum bouquets left by citizens, there is a fruit box labeled 'Donation Box' and 'To be delivered to the bereaved family.'

According to Mr. A, who witnessed the donation box, it was placed by a man estimated to be in his 60s to collect money without the consent of the bereaved family. Mr. A said, "The real estate next door reported him as a 'panhandler,'" and added, "According to the police, he is not a manager but really a panhandler."

A friend of the victim who visited the scene at the time was outraged and forcibly removed the donation box, but the man reportedly kept putting the box back. Mr. A said, "He put it back after it was forcibly removed," and "Moreover, he even wrote that the money would be delivered to the bereaved family."

It is presumed that some citizens were deceived by the fake donation box and actually donated money. In another photo, next to a man being questioned by the police, there is a box containing a few 1,000 won bills and some coins.

The police took measures to collect the donation box, and the man reportedly left the scene only after taking the box. Mr. A added, "The bereaved family came and cried while kicking it away. He is an old man who has nothing to do with the victim."

Netizens who heard the news criticized the act, saying, "How can someone think of making money from someone else's death?" "Even the devil would cry," "Humanity is disappearing," and "It is a shameless act that makes the bereaved family suffer twice."

Meanwhile, the Gwanak Police Station in Seoul will transfer the suspect, Jo Seon (33), involved in the stabbing rampage in Sillim-dong that left four casualties, to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the morning of the 28th.

Jo Seon is accused of stabbing a man in his 20s more than ten times with a weapon at the entrance of a shopping alley about 80 meters from Exit 4 of Sillim Station at around 2:07 p.m. on the 21st, killing him, and then repeatedly wielding the weapon against three men in their 30s inside the alley (charges include murder, etc.).

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency held a personal information disclosure committee on the 26th and decided to disclose Jo Seon's name, age, and face, recognizing the brutality of the crime and the seriousness of the damage.
