"Searching for Freedom" A Man Who Swam 10 Hours from China to Taiwan

A Chinese man swam for 10 hours to reach an outer island of Taiwan in search of freedom.

According to local media such as Taiwan Central News Agency and Taiwan News on the 27th, around 8 a.m. on the 24th, a man in his 40s, identified as Mr. A, was found by tourists near Qinbi Village on Beigandao Island, one of the Matsu Islands, after swimming from Huangqi Peninsula in Fujian Province, China.


The Matsu Islands are located off the coast of Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, China. Along with Kinmen Island, they are positioned at the forefront of Taiwan.


The media reported that Mr. A was in pain after being stung by a bee and asked tourists for help first. The tourists then reported the incident to the Lianjiang County authorities, who have jurisdiction over the Matsu Islands. Mr. A was transported to Beigan Health Center for treatment. It was reported that his injuries were not serious.


At the time of discovery, Mr. A was carrying dried food, clothing, emergency medical supplies, and Chinese yuan.


According to the investigation by Lianjiang County authorities, Mr. A stated that he swam from Huangqi Peninsula to Beigandao Island for 10 hours "to find freedom."

According to Google Maps, the straight-line distance from Huangqi Peninsula in Fujian Province to Beigandao Island in the Matsu Islands is approximately 12 km.


Mr. A is currently in custody of the Lianjiang County prosecutors and is under investigation. He has been charged with violating the "Taiwan Area and Mainland Area Peoples Relations Ordinance."


The Taiwan Area and Mainland Area Peoples Relations Ordinance is the legal basis for cross-strait (China and Taiwan) exchanges.
