Sejong Telecom Promotes Digital Innovation Convergence Project for Shipbuilding Industry Based on 5G Specialized Network

The consortium led by Sejong Telecom (CEO Byung-guk Lee) has been selected as the project executor for the 5G B2B activation project organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency (NIA). Through this project, Sejong Telecom will undertake the nation's first digital innovation task in the shipbuilding industry based on a 5G specialized network within the largest shipyard in Korea.

Sejong Telecom Promotes Digital Innovation Convergence Project for Shipbuilding Industry Based on 5G Specialized Network

Sejong Telecom is the lead organization for this project, forming a consortium with participating institutions HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore, Hanatech System, and Joeun Information System.

Korea's representative shipbuilding and offshore industry, despite its significant economic ripple effects, has faced many challenges in promoting digitalization and automation due to the vast site area and inadequate communication environments.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore's subsidiaries, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, foresee revolutionary changes by digitalizing manufacturing processes that have traditionally relied on the experience of functional personnel amid rapidly evolving technological environments. They have been exploring ways to optimize manufacturing processes and operations and simplify procedures efficiently using ICT technology to build ships.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which are conducting the demonstration project, have been promoting digitalization across their extensive ship manufacturing facilities covering approximately 7 million square meters (2.15 million pyeong). Through this project, they expect to take a step closer to implementing a smart communication platform for digital transformation of the shipbuilding and offshore industry based on a 5G specialized network over an area of 1 million square meters within the total site.

The goal of the project is the digital transformation of the shipyard. As the lead company, Sejong Telecom will oversee the entire project and provide a total solution for the 5G specialized network. In particular, various devices essential for the digital transformation of manufacturing companies will be introduced in this project. 5G specialized network-exclusive laptops and tablets, continuously integrated and verified with device manufacturers at the Bundang testbed, will be introduced for the first time in this project and verified in a commercial environment. Sejong Telecom, as a 5G specialized network expert company, also has experience successfully establishing a 5G specialized network-based safety management platform targeting the Banwol-Sihwa Industrial Complex in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province in 2022.

Based on its experience in IT design and construction for HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore plans to discover convergence services and expand to group companies in the future. By applying a 5G specialized network core shared network design, base stations will be built and service demonstrations conducted in each service area centered on the 5G specialized network core of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Hanatech System is responsible for 5G network analysis, service device management, and installation, while Joeun Information System handles construction design, system installation, and network integration and interworking tasks.

Director Kwang-mo Lee of Sejong Telecom’s Strategic Planning Team stated, “This 5G specialized network demonstration project will present standards for 5G specialized network services in large-scale manufacturing facilities and provide opportunities for domestic device manufacturers by supplying and verifying various devices. It will serve as a starting point for the digital transformation that will enhance the competitiveness of our shipbuilding and offshore industry.” He emphasized, “We will contribute to the application of the 5G specialized network ecosystem across large-scale domestic manufacturing industries such as steel, shipping, and chemicals in the future.”
