Donald Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate in the United States, stated on the 20th (local time) that he would abolish the Biden administration's electric vehicle policy if he succeeds in his re-election. He also criticized the Biden administration's electric vehicle transition, including subsidy support under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), for taking away jobs from workers in the automotive industry and causing vehicle price increases.
On the same day, former President Trump said in a video posted on his campaign website, "Biden is devising deadly orders to force Americans to buy expensive electric vehicles and is waging war against the U.S. automotive industry."
He criticized, "Such extreme leftist policies are a disaster for American households and consumers," adding, "The main reason the average price of new cars exceeds $50,000." He continued, "Despite the Biden administration spending billions of dollars in electric vehicle subsidies for the wealthy, ordinary Americans neither can afford to buy electric vehicles nor want to use them."
He also criticized that the rapid transition to electric vehicles is quickly reducing jobs in the existing automotive industry. He said, "According to one estimate, the Biden administration's electric vehicle transition will eliminate 117,000 jobs in U.S. automobile manufacturing," appealing for support from the United Auto Workers (UAW). The UAW supported President Biden in 2020 but has not yet expressed a support policy this time due to the IRA, which includes electric vehicle subsidies.
Former President Trump emphasized, "If Biden's attack is not stopped, American automobile production will be completely destroyed," adding, "That is why I will end the Green New Deal atrocities on my first day in office."
He repeatedly expressed his intention to abolish the electric vehicle policy, citing the revision of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as an achievement during his tenure. Former President Trump emphasized, "During my first term, I canceled the disastrous Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), ended the nightmare of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and renegotiated the terrible trade agreement that the Obama administration made with Korea," adding, "I turned terrible deals into great deals."
The Trump campaign criticized on its website, "Biden did nothing for 36 years sitting quietly in the Senate while America's automotive industry was destroyed by a flood of cheap imports from Japan and Korea." It continued, "China almost monopolizes the minerals needed to make electric vehicle batteries," and criticized, "The Biden administration, which is out of its mind, will make the U.S. automotive industry dependent on China through exhaust emission mandates."
