On the 20th, Seoul City announced the results of the ‘Nodeul Global Art Island National Idea Contest,’ selecting 19 winning entries including the grand prize winner, ‘Station: Beyond the Island.’

Earlier, the city held the contest for 50 days from April 28 to June 16 to gather various citizen ideas and opinions on programs, sculptures, spatial planning, and accessibility proposals within Nodeul Art Island, aiming to develop it as a new landmark along the Han River filled with nature, art, and unique experiences.

Out of a total of 63 submissions (103 participants/63 teams), the city selected 19 final winners through expert evaluation based on originality, feasibility, and relevance to the theme. Winners will receive a total prize money of 24 million KRW and the Seoul Metropolitan Mayor’s Award.

The grand prize was awarded to Junho Shin’s ‘Station: Beyond the Island.’ The judges highly evaluated the concrete and diverse ideas proposed for revitalizing Nodeul Island, including the establishment of a new subway station near the northern intersection of Hangang-daero, expansion of cultural and artistic spaces such as exhibition halls, performance venues, and observatories, as well as the widening of pedestrian paths.

The excellence awards went to three works: ‘SEOUL RIBBON’ (Jinwoo Kim), ‘Nodeul Siren’ (Moonju Yoon et al.), and ‘Flowscape’ (Jooyoung Park et al.). Additionally, 15 other works that creatively designed Nodeul Island’s spaces and programs were selected for outstanding awards (5 works) and encouragement awards (10 works).

Seoul City plans to hold an awards ceremony in September and organize an exhibition to share the original and creative ideas of the winning works with citizens.

The city intends to actively incorporate the excellent ideas proposed through this contest into the actual ‘Nodeul Global Art Island Development Project’ after gathering expert opinions and consulting with related organizations.

Seongki Hong, Director of Future Space Planning at Seoul City, said, “Through this contest, we were able to indirectly sense the future of Nodeul Art Island that citizens desire, and it was meaningful to find citizens’ deep interest and rich ideas about Nodeul Island. We will refer to the excellent ideas proposed and develop the island so that suitable content and functions harmoniously coexist in the future.”
