Heavy Rain of 51mm per Hour in Gwangju and Jeonnam... Widespread Rain Damage Reported

Heavy rain exceeding 51mm per hour has been pouring in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, causing repeated flooding damage.

According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on the 11th, as of 4 p.m. that day, the cumulative rainfall in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas was 67mm in Gwangju, 57.5mm in Hampyeong (Wolya), 54mm in Suncheon, 52.5mm in Muan, 51mm in Yeosu (Geomundo), 48mm in Jangseong, and 45.5mm in Hwasun.

In particular, the maximum hourly rainfall was 51.7mm in Gwangju, 50mm in Yeosu (Geomundo), 42.5mm in Hampyeong (Wolya), 41mm in Suncheon, and 34.5mm in Gurye (Piagol), with a large amount of rain falling heavily in a short period.

Currently, a heavy rain advisory has been issued for Gwangju and 11 cities and counties in Jeonnam (Naju, Damyang, Gokseong, Gurye, Jangseong, Hwasun, Suncheon, Muan, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, and Sinan).

As such, the heavy rain is causing flooding damage in various parts of the urban area.

Around noon on the same day, the ceiling structure in the corridor of an apartment in Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City collapsed, and a water pipe running above the ceiling in the daycare center inside the apartment burst, causing part of the ceiling to collapse.

In addition, roads in Jinwol-dong, Nam-gu, Imdong Five-way Intersection in Buk-gu, and around Gwangju Station are submerged, and firefighting authorities and local officials are conducting drainage operations.

This rain started due to the influence of a pressure trough and is expected to bring up to 150mm of rain by the 12th.
