Today's walking course takes you to the Sinchon area, Seoul's representative university district. Daehyeong Station on Line 6 is located near Sogang University in Mapo-gu and is close to the bustling Sinchon area. Daehyeong-dong, where Daehyeong Station is situated, was once known as "Dokmaeul" (Poison Village) because the area was engaged in making and selling earthenware jars. During the Japanese colonial period, it became Daehyeongjeong of Gyeongseongbu, and after several administrative reorganizations, it became today's Daehyeong-dong in October 1946.
Starting from Daehyeong Station, today's course visits three university campuses in the Sinchon area. The universities located in Sinchon are famous for having beautiful walking paths even in the heart of Seoul. Additionally, the alleys near the university areas offer affordable food and entertainment. This course starting from Daehyeong Station allows you to enjoy Sogang University, Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, and the youthful Sinchon street all at once.
The first stop is Sogang University near Daehyeong Station. Located on Baekbeom-ro in Mapo-gu, Sogang University is a private Catholic comprehensive university founded by the Jesuits in 1960. Inside the campus, there is a museum housing over 1,600 artifacts, the Gonzaga International House, a bookstore, and an underground campus with a food court, all worth visiting.
Next, head to Yonsei University's Sinchon Campus. Yonsei University is a private comprehensive university with a history of over 130 years, established in 1957 through the merger of Severance Medical College and Yonhee University. On campus, there are memorials related to the university's history and figures, including the site of the old Yonhui Palace, Sugyeongwon, the site of Gwanghyewon, the Lee Han-yeol Hill, the Yun Dong-ju monument, and the statue of missionary Underwood. The Baekyang-ro road, which stretches from the Yonsei University main gate to the main building, is also famous.
The Sinchon Ewha Womans University Specialty Street in front of Yonsei University's main gate is one of Seoul's representative university districts. Sinchon, known as a traditional youth street, has been considered a center of youth even before the rise of Hongdae. The Sinchon commercial area, centered around Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, and Sogang University, is a famous street where youth take a break, filled with stories, flavors, style, and excitement.
The final stop of the course is Ewha Womans University. Ewha, Korea's first women's school, was founded in 1886 by American missionary Mary Scranton and was originally named "Ewha Hakdang," a name bestowed by King Gojong. The campus, with its long-standing traditional buildings, greenery, and campus roads, exudes youthful energy. The underground campus plaza, ECC (Ewha Campus Complex), also boasts a beautiful exterior. After visiting Ewha Womans University, head to Exit 2 of Ewha Womans University Station to conclude today's course.
