Busan City and National Institute of Mathematical Sciences Begin Full-Scale Promotion of 'Busan Medical Mathematics Center Establishment'

Promise of Mutual Cooperation at City Hall on the 7th at 11 AM with Signing of Business Agreement

Expectations for Revitalizing Medical Industry through Installation, Operation, and Repair Science and Technology Utilization

On the 7th at 11 a.m., Busan City will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS, Director Kim Hyun-min) at the International Protocol Room on the 7th floor of City Hall to promote regional science and technology development and activate the medical and healthcare industry.

Busan City and National Institute of Mathematical Sciences Begin Full-Scale Promotion of 'Busan Medical Mathematics Center Establishment' Busan City Hall.

This MOU marks the starting signal for the promotion of the establishment of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences Regional Organization (Busan Medical Mathematics Center), which will proceed through a review committee and feasibility study, followed by approval from the board of directors of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS). A city official added that this brings Busan one step closer to advancing the local medical industry using mathematical sciences.

The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences, established in 2005, is the only government-funded research institute in the field of mathematics in Korea (located in Daejeon). It focuses on industrial mathematics research that solves mathematical problems in industrial sites and medical mathematics research that addresses issues arising in medical fields, based on its research and development (R&D) capabilities in mathematical sciences.

The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences aims to promote win-win cooperation with companies, hospitals, and universities using medical mathematics, and has operated a pilot 'Medical Mathematics Center' in the Busan area for the past 30 months (January 2020 to June 2022).

Medical mathematics is a field within industrial mathematics that integrates mathematical theories of analysis and modeling to solve problems occurring in medical settings (utilizing medical imaging data, numerical data, etc., for analysis, prediction, and modeling).

This agreement was prepared to continue the achievements of the pilot project by establishing and operating the Busan Medical Mathematics Center and to mutually cooperate in revitalizing the medical industry using mathematical science and technology.

The signing ceremony will be attended by Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon, NIMS Director Kim Hyun-min, Busan Medical Mathematics Center Director Yoon Kang-jun, and others.

Through this MOU, the city expects not only technical support but also significant benefits in technology exchange and joint research among medical institutions, companies, and universities in Busan by utilizing NIMS’s external infrastructure, facilitating cooperation with other regions and industries.

The main contents of the agreement are as follows:

▲ Mutual cooperation for the establishment and operation of the ‘Busan Medical Mathematics Center’ and for producing tangible results ▲ Administrative and financial support from Busan City ▲ Securing research and development funds and personnel necessary for the stable operation of the center by NIMS, including provisions for the development of the medical industry and attraction of the Medical Mathematics Center.

Kim Hyun-min, Director of NIMS, stated, “Through this agreement, we have reached a groundbreaking turning point to expand and enhance the institute’s role by developing, distributing, and verifying foundational technology solutions necessary for building an environment related to the healthcare industry through the efficient use of medical data.”

He added, “Furthermore, by leading digital transformation and fostering specialized personnel to solve industrial problems in the medical and industrial sectors, a systematic foundation has been established to supply future growth energy through a collaborative ecosystem among government, industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals.”

Mayor Park Hyung-joon said, “In this era of rapid digital transformation, mathematics beyond textbooks is connected to citizens’ daily lives and industries in various forms. Especially since mathematics is at the core of 4th Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, encryption, and quantum computing, the connection points between mathematics and industry are limitless.” He added, “I look forward to the role of the Busan Medical Mathematics Center in new technology development research, fostering specialized talent, and nurturing the intelligent healthcare (smart healthcare) industry. I ask for much cooperation to ensure the smooth progress of establishing the regional organization and the formation of a solid medical mathematics platform, and the city will actively cooperate as well.”
