Introduction to the Background and Meaning of Yeongsan's Guardian Deity
Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced that it is holding a special exhibition titled "Munhojang, Becoming a God," focused on the Yeongsan Munhojang Gut, at the Changnyeong Museum from the 4th until October 29th.
Changnyeong Museum is hosting a special exhibition titled "Munhojang, Becoming a Deity," centered on the Yeongsan Munhojanggut ritual.
The Yeongsan Munhojang Gut is a type of Danoje festival honoring the Munhojang deity.
This exhibition presents the legend of Munhojang passed down in Changnyeong, explaining how the local official Munhojang became the guardian deity of Yeongsan and the deeper meanings behind this transformation through various exhibits. Additionally, the performance of the Munhojang Gut ritual can be viewed in video form.
A county official stated, "The Yeongsan Munhojang Gut is one of the few Danoje rituals that have been continuously preserved, alongside the Gangneung Danoje, which is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage." He added, "We hope to reexamine its value through this exhibition."
The Changnyeong Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free. The museum is closed every Monday.
