From department stores transformed into Christmas landmarks with media facades, to the giant media wall adorning the exterior of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, and upscale restaurants combining media art, media art has established itself as a key artistic content that enhances the value of spaces in recent years.
Going forward, Bukchang-dong is expected to gain prestige through media art. Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) announced on the 29th that a 'media wall' will be created in the Bukchang-dong food street.
A media wall refers to a structure where the wall surface is fully covered with a screen to display artistic videos. It allows for exhibiting various artworks at a relatively low cost and has recently been installed in department stores, large buildings, and museums.
The installation site is along Sejong-daero 78-84 in Jung-gu, with a scale of approximately 20-50 meters. The district plans to improve the urban landscape by installing the media wall in Bukchang-dong food street, providing visual attractions for nearby office workers and foreign tourists visiting Bukchang-dong.
The district will start the bidding announcement in June, complete construction by November, and begin pilot operation by the end of the year. A district official stated, "Once the media wall is installed, we plan to screen videos reflecting the identity of Bukchang-dong and Jung-gu, as well as seasonal themed art videos."
Bukchang-dong food alley has been one of Seoul’s representative food streets since the 1970s and is adjacent to Sungnyemun, Deoksugung Palace, and City Hall Plaza, making it a must-visit course for foreign tourists. However, the area has been considered in need of landscape improvement due to a lack of facilities or design elements expressing the street’s identity.
Accordingly, the district applied for the Seoul City Landscape Improvement Project last year and secured a budget of about 1 billion KRW.
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, "In Jung-gu, one of Seoul’s representative tourist destinations, urban design is competitiveness itself," adding, "Through the landscape improvement project, we will transform the old and worn-out old downtown into a city that people want to visit and stay longer."
