Over 300mm of Heavy Rain in Southwestern Japan... 1 Dead, 2 Missing

Heavy torrential rain exceeding 300mm has poured down in southwestern Japan, resulting in one death and two people missing.


On the 1st, local media including the Asahi Shimbun reported that from the previous night until that day, heavy rain fell in northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture, and an elderly man was found dead inside a flooded vehicle in Yamaguchi City.

By 10 a.m. that day, the 24-hour rainfall amounts were recorded as 310.5mm in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture, 309mm in Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and 307.5mm in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture.


In Yamaguchi City, as flooding continued, dozens of residents in the Asada district were rescued by boat. In Yufu City, one resident went missing after a house was swept away by landslide debris, and in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, search operations are underway as contact has not been established with the driver of a submerged vehicle. In Ishikawa Prefecture, evacuation orders were issued to a total of 5,814 households due to the risk of river flooding.


The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasted heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in western and eastern Japan until the 2nd. The expected 24-hour rainfall by 6 a.m. on the 2nd is 200mm for northern and southern Kyushu, and 120mm for the Kanto-Koshin region including Tokyo.
