The 80th Student Model Assembly Held
The Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairman Jeong Muchang) announced on the 25th that it held the ‘80th Student Mock Council of Gwangju Metropolitan Council’ for Yeongcheon Middle School students at the council's main chamber at 4 p.m. on the 23rd.
The event was attended by 34 students from Gwangju Middle School, with Second Vice Chairman Lee Gwisoon observing.
The meeting proceeded with 2-minute free speeches followed by the review and resolution of ordinances, providing students with an opportunity to directly experience local council legislative activities.
The students had a 2-minute free speech session on the topics of ‘Warning against the Denigration of the May 18 Democratic Movement’ and ‘Our Role in Preventing School Violence.’ They also proposed the ordinance titled ‘Ordinance on the Use of Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices by Students within Yeongcheon Middle School,’ which was explained, followed by a Q&A session, debates for and against, and finally resolved through electronic voting.
Han Taeseong, the student who served as the chairperson, expressed, “Through this mock council, I was able to experience the activities of council members, which was a valuable time to understand modern democracy and cultivate a sense of community, active participation, and responsibility.”
The Gwangju Metropolitan Council has been conducting student mock councils since 2005, with schools recommended by the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education. So far, a total of 80 sessions have been held with over 8,100 participants, and at the end of the year, awards are planned for outstanding experience essays submitted by participating students.
